The Fast Track

Enjoy the full Alps 2 Ocean adventure with 5 nights on the trail. This allows for a faster paced ride, combining sections of the trail into each day. There is still plenty of time to appreciate and experience the varied landscapes and sights that the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki District have to offer.

All of this with friendly support provided along the way, should you need it. This experience has designated start dates which you will find below.


What’s Included

  • Transfer from our depot in Omarama to Aoraki/Mount Cook.

  • Scenic walk to view the Tasman Glacier.

  • Cycle hire – Your choice of Merida Crossway Hybrid / Merida E bike

  • Cycle accessories – helmet, rear pannier bag, gel seat cover, puncture repair kit, bike lock, drink bottle holder and high visibility vest.

  • Five night’s accommodation of an excellent standard in double or twin share (additional cost of $260 for a single supplement).

  • Helicopter flight from Mount Cook Airport

  • Breakfast every day, lunch one day and evening meals included in two locations.
  • Daily baggage transfer (1x 15kg bag per person) between all accommodation providers.

  • Tour itinerary, directions to accommodation and A2O trail map provided.
  • Cycle breakdown and rider support service.

  • Daily check-ins with Trail Adventures in person or by phone.


We will meet you at our depot in Omarama (at St Thomas’ Church, right next to the Heritage Hotel) at 11am. You’ll be fitted on your bike and will have some time to meet other people on the tour with you as well as to enjoy lunch at one of the local cafes or the pub. We will then transport you through some amazing scenery to Mt Cook Village where you’ll stay at Aoraki Court for the night in a lovely studio unit.

We offer to take you to the Tasman Glacier moraine wall, where you can walk up to the lookout and view the glacier lake in the afternoon.

At 8am we’ll transfer you from the Motel up to The Hermitage Hotel where you’ll enjoy a lovely buffet breakfast. We then head back to the motel briefly before departing for the trail start point at White Horse Hill Campground. We prepare the bikes for you and then it’s approximately an 8km cycle down to Mt Cook Airfield where we’ll meet and you’ll board a helicopter for a short transfer (scenic flights can be added) across the Tasman River to the Rotten Tommy landing area. Please follow all instructions given by Heliworks Ltd at all times. After the transfer you’ll continue riding down the side of Lake Pukaki enjoying the amazing view before heading across the Pukaki Flats to Twizel where you’ll spend the night at The Mackenzie Country Hotel.

Today you cycle along the edge of stunning turquoise coloured canals, and the southern edge of Lake Ohau along a beautiful trail to Lake Ohau Lodge. It’s then a steady climb up out of Ohau to the highpoint of the A2O trail at 900m above sea level. The destination is Omarama but make sure you take a look at the Historic Benmore Station woolshed and consider a side excursion to The Clay Cliffs along the way. Tonight you stay at the nicely appointed Sierra Motel.

There are options for dinner nearby however we do recommend pre booking, and you should also consider pre booking the Omarama Hot Tubs in the evening.

Today’s ride will take you around the edge of hydro lakes Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki with you finishing your days ride in the quaint little town of Kurow. You’ll stay at Riverside B&B or a nearby holiday home.

After a hearty breakfast you will set off, riding through Pasquale Vineyard and alongside the mighty Waitaki River. Take a look at the ancient Māori rock drawings before arriving at the historic town of Duntroon. The Vanished World museum is located in Duntroon where you’ll be able to gather information about the next stage of your ride ahead including the Elephant Rocks and the stunning geology of the area. You’ll then follow the trail through several farms to the unique rock formations known as Elephant Rocks. You’ll continue on and be surrounded by limestone escarpments. Make sure you’ve got a light on your bike, a torch or a phone with a torch as you ride through the historic Rakis Tunnel which is very dark in the middle. Consider stopping at God’s Old House in Windsor for a well-deserved coffee (cash only!) before riding through to Oamaru taking in the beautifully manicured Oamaru Public Gardens along the way to the trail finishing point down at Oamaru Harbour. We will meet you here to collect the bikes and transfer you through to Poshtel where you will stay tonight.

You will have time to explore Oamaru in the morning before continuing with your travel plans or returning home.
